Pattaya’s leisure options

Travelling from Bangkok to Pattaya isn’t difficult. U-Tapao is positioned about one hour east of the seaside resort and is the nearest aviation hub. Bangkok Airways runs minivans that provide transportation into the city. From the central Hua Lampong railway station in Bangkok, a daily train service to Pattaya is available. The rail trip will take about five hours. Between 05:00 and 22:00 cheap buses to Pattaya leave every 30 minutes from the capital’s Eastern Bus Terminal. The trip by bus usually takes no longer than three hours.

Pattaya is home to plenty of fabulous restaurants serving a wide selection of mouth-watering national and international dishes, as well as vibrant beer pubs with eager Thai girls. Enjoying a traditional Thai massage treatment at one of the many parlours should definitely not be missed. In addition, Pattaya’s cabaret performances are extremely commercial but good entertainment. Beautiful katoeys (transsexuals and transvestites) dress up outrageously and perform various cabaret acts.

Pattaya only has a few daytime attractions, with Wat Khao Prayai being the most culturally important sight. Positioned high above the city, this modestly-sized Buddhist temple complex offers some stunning vistas and is home to a 10-metre-high golden Buddha statue. The Ripley’s Believe It or Not feature will keep the children entertained for hours and is located in the Royal Garden Plaza, which also houses the Pattaya Elephant Village.

Surely, the beach area is one of the most popular attractions, with most of the action on Pattaya Bay. Here, visitors can find reasonably priced high-rise hotel establishments as well as many beach loungers for hire. Pattaya offers a range of water-based recreational options, such as parasailing, jet skiing, fishing and scuba diving.

A favoured alternative to Pattaya is offered by Jomtien Beach. This cleaner destination has fewer seedy pubs and more peaceful beaches. A vast elephant park and botanical garden can be explored in Nong Nooch, which is positioned within less than 12 miles from Pattaya.
