Riding Pattaya Baht Buses
Posted by Party Pete on September 2nd, 2011 filed in travel tipPattaya visitors who do not rent a motorcycle or car find that they frequently use the city’s ubiquitous Baht Buses. These converted blue pick-up trucks are an economical choice for reaching city locations. The vehicles feature a covered over back containing a bench seat either side of the flatbed. Baht Buses are called songthaews (two rows) in other parts of Thailand, but garnered their name in Pattaya as this was the flat fare at one time.
Baht Buses are a little more expensive nowadays and minimum fares for journeys shared with other passengers range from 10 to 30 Baht. An estimated 700-strong fleet of Baht Buses offers service on the streets of Pattaya. During daytime hours, the busiest route for the Baht Bus drivers is the circuit that takes in Second Road, Dolphin Circle roundabout, Beach Road and South Pattaya Road. Passengers can board and disembark at any point on the loop.
Those picking up a Baht Bus that is parked at the side of the road, especially at night, may have to pay 100 Baht for the trip and possibly more if going to Jomtien. Passengers should always agree on a price before boarding these taxis. In cases where travellers feel they have been overcharged they can make a complaint at 038 429216, but need to make a note of the vehicle’s three-digit identification number.
