Rayong is a pretty province which contains a whole host of interesting islands and beaches where you can escape the frantic pace of the city and unwind while catching the sun and dining on delicious seafood as you watch the sun set. The province contains over 100 kilometres of coastline to explore and is easily reachable in just a few hours by bus from Bangkok’s Ekamai bus terminal.

There are many popular tourist destinations in the province, including Ko Samet, Ko Mun and Ko Kodi. All of these islands feature stretches of golden sand, beach bars and a variety of western and Thai food.

Naturally, snorkeling and scuba diving are major activities in this province, whilst many people like to go on a boat tour of the islands. Other smaller sun kissed islands which are just waiting to be explored include Ko Man Klang, Ko Man Nok and the often overlooked Ko Man Nai.

While in the area, pay a visit to the Khao Chamao/Khao Wong National Park. Here you will find several pretty waterfalls where you can swim amongst the fish, as well as seeing tigers, wild elephants and bears.

Nearby is the Rayong Turtle Conservation Centre, which cares for the area’s endangered sea turtles with a view to releasing them back into the wild. You can learn more about the now rare and beautiful turtles at the visitors’ centre, which contains pictures of the turtles and shells from their eggs.

Suan Son ‘Pine Park’ is situated just 5 kilometers from the pretty port of Ban Phe. This is a great place to spend a couple of hours walking when you need a break from the beach. Incidentally, Ban Phe is the port from which to catch the ferry to the large and beautiful island of Ko Samet.

11 kilometers east at Suan Wang Keaw you will find yet more sandy beaches and the island of Ko Thalu, which is particularly good for diving as the waters are home to some pretty colourful coral and shoals of exotic fish. This is also a great place to hang out if you happen to arrive on the weekend and want to avoid the crowds that tend to congregate on many of the other islands and beaches at the end of the working week.

Chonburi is a province full of beautiful sandy beaches, enchanting tropical islands, abundant natural resources and delicious fresh seafood. This is a great place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the busy city for a while and relax on the beach. The capital town of Chonburi is the nearest seaside town to Bangkok. Located on the eastern coast of the Gulf of Thailand, Chonburi is just 80 kilometres from Bangkok and very popular with residents of Bangkok on weekends and holidays.

Chonburi province contains many places of interest for visitors. Particularly well known throughout the world is the seaside town of Pattaya, while the town Si Racha is famous throughout Thailand for its spicy chilli sauce.

Particularly of interest in the area is the picturesque island of Ko Si Chang, which was made popular when King Rama IV, Rama V and Rama VI visited the island for some much deserved rest and relaxation. King Rama V initiated the construction the first palace for royal home-stay in the summer, and the idea proved popular with subsequent rulers and people of note.

There are many beautiful beaches and other places of interest on Ko Si Chang. The meditation caves at the Tham Yai Phrik Vipassana Monastery are a good place to get in touch with nature while learning the art of meditation.

There are plenty of great places on the island to swim, such as the picturesque Hat Tham Phang (Fallen Cave Beach), Hat Sai Kaew and Hat Tha Wang Palace, which is a great picnic spot.

The San Jao Phaw Khao Yai Chinese Temple is located high on a cliff top overlooking the sea and offers spectacular views over the ocean, and the limestone cave of Tham Saowapha is definitely worth a visit, although don’t forget to take a torch.

There are a number of small islands located around Ko Si Chang such as Ko Khaam Noi, Ko Ran Dok Mai and Ko Prong. A good way to explore them is to rent a sea kayak, go scuba diving or go on a snorkeling trip to the nearby Ko Khaang Khaow (Bat Island).
Ko Si Chang is a great place to sample the abundant local seafood, and what could be better than eating fresh barbecued seafood on the beach whilst you drink and cold beer and watch the sun slowly set.

At Sri Racha Tiger Zoo, visitors are treated to an interesting blend of capitalism and wildlife. The zoo was opened to the public on April 23rd 1997 and consists of more than 100 acres. At Sri Racha visitors can learn about, observe and even interact with wild animals.

One of the highlights is the crocodile show, which lasts for 25 minutes. The floor is constantly slick with water, and the young man makes a show of slipping over as he wrestles with the crocodiles.

Nearby is the scorpion cave, where visitors are greeted by the sight of hundreds of luminous scorpions glowing in the gloom. Also impressive is the crocodile pond, where more than a thousand crocodiles lay sunbathing. They lay so still that visitors often think they are fake.

Walk cautiously across an aerial bridge over the pond to find the tiger tunnel, where around a hundred tigers relax in a fairly natural environment. In this spacious enclosure are several caves for tigers to retreat from the heat, rocky ledges and muddy puddles. The tigers seem pretty content as they stretch their legs or bath. The enclosure is designed so that visitors can admire the tigers without intruding.

The elephant show is another highlight and is held several times a day. Music blares as a group of enormous elephants lumber into the stage area. During this show the elephants stand on their hind legs, do handstands, walk a tightrope and even play basketball.

Sri Racha is said to be the most successful tiger-breeding centre in the world. The zoo could, potentially, play an important role in the future of these highly endangered animals.

Information
Tours to Sri Racha from Pattaya are available, or you can get a bus to Si Racha and a songheaw from there. The entire journey takes just 1 hour.

The admission fee is 300B for adults, 150B for children. Opening times are 08:00 to 17:30 daily and you need at least four hours to see everything.

Pattaya is a popular tourist resort on the north gulf coast of eastern Thailand. Located 150km southeast of Bangkok and is most famous for it’s go-go and beer bars, but local authority has made efforts to provide more family- friendly attractions and activities, specialist conferences and golfing. Although, the sex industry is still going strong and sex tourism, remains the key money earner in Pattaya.

Pattaya public transportation options are cost effective way to get around Pattaya. There are a number of different options to choose from. This rough information is subject to change but it will provide you with the basics for planning a trip and use of public transport.

Buses:

Local buses are scheduled for every 30 minutes from the scheduled stops and include wheelchair facilities. Local buses are not considered reliable as songhaews and few people use them because of this. At various points, scheduled or planned services have been terminated or never started.

Taxis (Cars and Motorbikes):

The fastest wat around Pattaya is by use of motorbike taxis. A motor bike taxis is less expensive than a songthaew. This mode of transportation is much faster but it is also considered less safe. Though two or more passengers can physically get on a motorbike taxi, this is actually illegal. You will pay between 30-40 Baht for a trip in the town. There are a number of stands around Pattaya or you can flag down a driver.

Meter taxis are fairly common in Pattaya as well. These taxis come from Bangkok and typically have brought a visitor from Bangkok or the airport and will act as a local driver until they get a return trip to Bangkok. These taxis are generally more expensive than Songthaew and motorbike taxis.

Pattaya isn’t all neon lights and lipstick, there are also some very beautiful nature spots waiting to be discovered. Pattaya Beach is situated alongside the city centre and is a popular spot for jet-skis and speed boats. Just south of the city is the pretty stretch of sand known as Jomtien Beach, which is much quieter than Pattaya Beach and a good place to chill out for a few hours.

There are many small islands located close to Pattaya’s northern shores, all of which make good diving and snorkeling destinations. Ko Sak and Ko Krok are known as the “Near Islands”, while the “Far Islands” include Ko Rin, Ko Man Wichai, Ko Hua Chang and Ko Badan.

Also known as Coral Island, Ko Lan is a picturesque little island situated 7.5 kilometers west of Pattaya. Easily accessible by both speedboat and ferry, Ko Lan is much more relaxed than the mainland beaches and makes a good day trip.

Another great day trip is the large and interesting Sri Racha Tiger Zoo, which features several hundred tigers and thousands of alligators. The tiger zoo offers the opportunity to view and interact with animals in exciting new ways, such as cuddling tiger cubs and helping hatch baby crocodiles from their eggs.

If you need a break from the beach, pay a visit to the Nong Nooch Natural Botanical Garden, which is located 15 kilometers east of Pattaya and has lively cultural shows.

People have been alarmed by a thick fog which has descended on Pattaya which was thought to be caused by a toxic substance. Fingers were pointed at the Laem Chabang and Map Ta Phut and industrial estates but after tests were conducted by meteorologists but there was nothing that suggested such a link.

Deputy Mayor Wirawat Khakhai told reporters that the scientist’s “weather mobile” determined that the fog was formed by cold area from northern Thailand that blew over the area and then converged with humid warmer currents from the Kingdom’s south. As the fog was a few degrees cooler then the air it was moving into it became a good deal denser than usually appears in the region during this time of the year.

Alarm has been raised about the quality of air around Pattaya for some time with readings of 280 microns/sqm of dust particles being recorded during particularly dry spells. Any reading more than 120 is considered unhealthy for breathing. Air pollution has been linked to a number of respiratory illnesses and conditions.

The Diana Inn Hotel, based on the Second Road in Pattaya, has introduced a post office desk directly at the reception in the hotel lobby.

Hotel staff have received fully training by the Banglamung Post Office to be able to deal with most everyday functions. Although it is mainly guests that are being targeted by the new facility, customers from outside will also be able to take advantage.

Already at the lobby is a bar, travel agency and coffee shop, and although banking services are not yet offered, there is every chance they will be in the future.

Although this is not a unique concept in the worldwide hospitality industry, it is certainly the first of its kind in Pattaya. The hotel has a Green Bottle Pub and Restaurant right next door complete with big screen TV for sport and beer garden.
